Title: Helping without Hurting for Short-term Teams
These lessons are based on the book, When Helping Hurts, by Steve Corbett and Brian Fikkert (2009). The ideas are challenging and thought-provoking, leading to a new understanding of short-term missions. Comparing Relief and Development uses the River Crossing Story to demonstrate relief from development. Then short-term teams are challenged to apply this to their own situation—how can they promote development and not just provide relief? Risks of Relief examines the risks of outsiders providing relief, and examines ways to do this better, using more local leadership. Doing Missions without Causing Harm explains that, for people in developing nations, doing missions with outsiders may be like “dancing with an elephant”. In this lesson, the participants calculate the true cost of building a house, and then develop principles or guidelines for short-term teams. The lesson plans in this manual can be used in at least a couple of ways: (1) to prepare short-term teams or (2) to teach the topic to any small group. DOWNLOAD = 1MB    Topic List

Title: Learning that Leads to Action for Short-term Teams
Short-term teams will learn a participatory learning technique that helps communities to create their own solutions. This manual includes three lessons. This first lesson, How we Learn, examines how adults learn practical skills. These principles of learning are applied in the communities so that community members discover and develop their own solutions. During second lesson, Participatory LePSAS Learning Techniques, they will learn to do effective teaching that is Learner-centered, Problem-posing, with Self-discovery, and is Action-oriented and Spirit-guided. They will also present a problem-posing role play as a starter. In the final lesson, Learning to Facilitate a CHE Lesson, which lasts 2 to 3 hours, participants learn to use a lesson plan and prepare to facilitate a CHE lesson. If there is time, they may practice facilitating a lesson plan. They also learn to use picture books and storying as ways that the CHEs can share what they have learned in the community. The lesson plans in this manual can be used in at least a couple of ways: (1) to prepare short-term teams or (2) to teach the topic to any small group. DOWNLOAD = 1MB    Topic List

Title: Mobilizing the Church for Wholistic Ministry for Short-term Teams
How can the church become God’s agent of transformation in a community? And how can short-term teams work alongside the church in their wholistic outreach in the community? The first step is Seeing the Community Through God's Eyes. This lesson tells the story of Pastor Juan, who learned to see his community as Jesus saw it. Participants learn to reach out to the community in a wholistic manner. God’s Mathematics demonstrates how God often works in surprising ways to multiply our gifts for his glory. Finally, with Seed Projects, short-term teams can work with the local church to carry out small-scale projects that demonstrate God’s love to the community. The lesson plans in this manual can be used in at least a couple of ways: (1) to prepare short-term teams or (2) to teach the topic to any small group. DOWNLOAD = 1 MB    Topic List

Title: Obesity and Being Overweight for Short Term Teams
Obesity and overweight are becoming major health problems around the world. Worldwide, obesity has doubled since 1980 and in many countries obesity kills more people than undernutrition. The manual contains five lessons. The first lesson, Keeping a Healthy Weight, gives an overview of the problem of obesity, along with practical steps to keep a healthy weight. The second lesson, Obesity and Overweight, discusses in more detail the problems caused by excessive weight. Preventing Obesity examines practical ways to prevent obesity by healthy eating and by increased activity. Physical Activity suggests ways to prevent obesity and health problems by increasing physical activity. Childhood Obesity explores the serious issue of obesity in children and youths, including the health risks along with strategies to reduce childhood obesity. Title: Principles of Christian Community Development for Short-term Teams
What is distinctive about Christian community development? What makes it Christian? And how can short-term teams promote community development? This manual explores three inter-related responses to those challenging questions. The first lesson, Gospel of the Kingdom, discusses the wholistic nature of the kingdom of God. Our challenge is to let Christ rule in every area of our lives, as described in Micah 6:8. Comparing Relief and Development contrasts relief, or doing things for people, with development, or enabling or teaching people so that they learn to develop themselves. Short Term Trips that Build Community Ownership discusses what outsiders, such as short-term teams, can do to help a community take control of its own development and create its own solutions. The lesson plans in this manual can be used in at least a couple of ways: (1) to prepare short-term teams or (2) to teach the topic to any small group. DOWNLOAD = 1 MB    Topic List

How a Short Term Team can Build Capacity for a CHE Community uses a case study from La Verde, Guatemala to demonstrate how short-term teams can work to build capacity in a target community where CHE is already being done. The lesson plans in this manual can be used in at least a couple of ways: (1) to prepare short-term teams or (2) to teach the topic to any small group. DOWNLOAD = 1MB

Spiritual Life

Title: Beyond the Sacred- Secular Divide
Scott Allen's book destroys the sacred-secular dualism that has crippled the church, and it shows how discipleship involves all of our lives, loves, and relationships. I pray this book gains a wide reading. Its message is desperately needed. -John Stonestreet, Summit Ministries & Breakpoint The Bible reveals God as the creator and lord of everything: "The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it" (Psalm 24:1). Yet for many people, including many Christians, this comprehensive worldview has become obscured. A line divides personal faith from daily life, work, and recreation, and we are left feeling fragmented, disconnected, and without purpose. But God is at work today, leading a generation back to an undivided understanding of the kingdom of God and the earth. What lies beyond the sacred-secular divide? A fulfilling, integrated life that unites faith and action, the spiritual and the physical, Sundays and the rest of the week. God cares about every part, and we have the incredible opportunity to join him in his all-encompassing, redemptive plan for our world. What are we waiting for?
